Solar Water Heating in the Western Cape

  • Solar Water Heating in the Western Cape has different challenges to Gauteng, as the winters have little sunshine and in summer the solar water heating systems are prone to overheat.
  • After 12 years in Gauteng and 2 years testing in the Western Cape UberSolar offers consumers proven technology which will offer far higher performance than other systems without overheating in summer.
  • More performance equates to more electricity savings, more financial savings on electricity and more hot water than other solar heating systems.

What Do You Offer?

  • We Retrofit (convert) your existing electric geyser to solar while retaining the electric back up for bad weather days.
  • Your electric geyser accounts typically for about 40% of your monthly electricity bill.
  • In the Western Cape we look to save more than 85% of the electricity used in your electric geyser.
  • We also do Complete Solar water heating systems, both Split Indirect Pumped (the same as the Retrofits) and Complete Integrated on roof systems.

Payment Options

We offer three payment choices:

  • Cash price with a deposit of typically 80% and balance following Installation.
  • Instalment finance with a deposit of 30% to 50% and interest free payments over 3 ,6, 9 or 12 months.
  • Pay As You Go Solar with NO DEPOSIT and interest free monthly payments over 24 months.

IF YOU HAVE AN ELECTRIC GEYSER, PAY AS YOU GO IS A ‘NO-BRAINER’ AND THERE IS NO CATCH

Cash Prices – What Does it Cost?

  • First choose your geyser size. It is most likely to be either 150 litre or 200 litre.
  • Next look at the number of people using the geyser – choose ‘Suitable for Persons’.
  • The prices are shown for Supply Only and Supply Including Installation.
  • The options for Controllers and NightSolar are shown below the prices.
  • EVT’s stands for Evacuated Tube.
Each Evacuated Tube has a deemed output of 0.33 kWh per day at 20 MJ of solar irradiation. For example 24 EVT’s would be 7.67kWh’s of energy input, being the same as the electricity needed at 7.67 kWh to heat a 150 tank once from cold at 16°C to 60°C.

The Additional Options

Your individual Retrofit quotes will be the same as shown above but with the addition of the chosen options as applicable.

Controllers

  • UberTrac On Line Controller We offer the UberTrac On-line Controller on all larger systems as it provides total control of both the solar system and the electrical back up. It is the ultimate On-line Controller visible on both your phone and computer. (see UberTrac video). Typical cost is R3,900 installed.
  • Geyser Electric Back Up WiFi Timer The Geyser Wifi Timer (Control) only controls your electric back up times with the thermostat temperature being determined by the geyser thermostat using a simple App on your phone. Suitable for the smaller systems. Typical cost installed R600.

NightSolar

  • Using the residual heat in the solar manifolds, NightSolar is unique and like a solar (water) battery, where heat can be extracted and put into your electric geyser after dark.
  • Typically adding between 25% and 30% extra hot water after dark, using a small mains transformer and the solar pump. If not used the following days performance is enhanced by a similar amount. (Works only with the UberTrac Controller). (see NightSolar video)

Rear Legs

  • Rear legs are fitted to the solar collector frame for flat roof installations, pitched roofs with reverse inclination or for very low-pitched roofs. Customer can choose their preferred inclination (useful for satisfying body corporates).

Complete Systems

  • The difference between a retrofit and a complete system is the tank (geyser) and its related accessories.
  • The cost of a 150 litre tank at the end of 2023 is around R4,100 including VAT.
  • The cost of a 200 litre tank at the end of 2023 is around R7,100 including VAT.
  • For large families putting in two 150 litre tanks (making 300 litres) at R8,200 represents better value than a 200 litre tank.
  • Extras to the tanks are drip trays, timber for driptrays and the geyser to sit on (to spread the weight load), piping from the drip tray(s) to the outside roof, vacuum breakers (2 – one for hot and one for cold), isolating lever valves, and depending on the customer, a Pressure Control Valve. A PCV must be fitted on the cold water main into the house, but frequently plumbers add an extra unit before the geyser on the cold water main
  • The material cost added to a retrofit depending on the tank size will be the tank cost plus R1,000 to R2,000 excluding the Pressure Control Valve.

Instalment Finance Payment Options

  • Instalment finance enables customers to buy on an instalment basis with no interest charged. A very small administration fee maybe levied (included in the monthly payments below).
  • For other sizes of systems please request a quote.
  • The prices shown below include both an UberTrac controller and Nightsolar, supply and installation including VAT
